Algorand Governance

In order to earn a high amount of interest on your ALGO, you must participate in the Algorand governance program. What this entails is you committing your ALGO for a period of time (about 3 months) and voting on decisions regarding the Algorand itself. This may seem intimidating to many people, especially if you don’t know anything about cryptocurrency or any decisions one might need to make in the ecosystem, but Algorand has made the process easier by explaining proposals very simply, allowing you to change your vote, and also allowing you to see what everyone else has voted for. So far, the proposals have also only had 2 choices, making it even simpler.

The governance session lasts about 3 months and consists of the ALGO committal period, the voting period, and the cooldown period. 

The committal period is when ALGO holders commit their ALGO and register themselves to vote. Once the committal period is over, new holders will have missed out on the ability to earn governance rewards until the next governance session. If your ALGO balance drops below your committed amount, you will forfeit your governance rewards.

The voting period is when the governance session’s proposal will be shown. You must make a choice to receive governance rewards. You are allowed to change your vote at any time during the voting period Governors with a higher amount of committed ALGO hold more voting power.

The cooldown period is self explanatory. You don’t need to worry about anything during this period and it’s essentially the wait time until the next governance session, which you again will need to remember to commit your ALGO and vote just as you’ve already done.

Note: When you commit your ALGO to governance, it is NOT locked and DOES NOT leave your wallet. If your ALGO balance ever drops below the amount that you’ve committed, you will NOT receive governance rewards.

Pairing The Pera Algo Wallet With The Algorand Governance Website

With ALGO in your Pera Algo Wallet, you’re now ready to connect to the Algorand governance website. You may not be able to take advantage of interest earning opportunities right away as you must commit your ALGO at the beginning of each governance session.

1. Go to https://governance.algorand.foundation/ on a computer or mobile device other than the one with your Pera Algo Wallet. Choose “Connect Wallet” at the top right.
   

2. Choose “Pera Algo Wallet”. You will be shown a QR code to scan.

3. Back in your Pera Algo Wallet, press the scan icon in the top right. Scan the QR code.

4. Choose “Connect” after scanning the code.

5. Back on the governance website, select your account in the window that pops up.

6. With your Pera Algo Wallet now connected to the governance website, you’ve now set yourself up to register and vote in all future governance sessions! Pay attention to the dates provided on the right hand side for important dates.

Final Thoughts

1. Go to https://www.keplr.app/ and install the extension for your browser.
   

2. Open the Keplr wallet extension and choose whether to sign in with Google, create an account just for Keplr, or use your Ledger hardware wallet if you have one. We recommend creating an account or using Ledger because you will have a recovery phrase that can be used to restore your ATOM to any other wallet that supports ATOM, whereas choosing to sign in with Google will only work for wallets that also support signing in with Google.

3. Upon successful creation/sign in, the extension will close. Reopen Keplr and you will now see your account overview. Click “Deposit” to get your ATOM address.

4. Send your ATOM to the provided address.

5. After receiving your ATOM, go back to your account overview and click “Stake”.

6. You will be provided with a list of validators to stake with. Click the manage button for each validator to possibly see their website and description.

7. After deciding on a validator to stake with, click “Delegate”.

8. The new window will allow you to set how much ATOM you wish to stake. We recommend staking nearly everything if you plan on holding your ATOM long-term. Leave at least $0.50 worth of ATOM in your wallet to pay for future fees. Be aware that staking your ATOM will lock it for 21 days. Unstaking will also take an additional 21 days if you choose to do so.

9. A transaction popup will appear allowing you to set the fee. We recommend keeping the fee on average as the cheapest fee is unreliable and there is a chance for delegation to fail. Click “Approve” when you’re ready to finalize the delegation.

10. After approving the transaction, your ATOM is now staked and you will begin earning interest!

2. Cosmostation

Cosmostation is the recommended Cosmos wallet for your mobile device. It is simple to use and like Keplr, it can be paired with a Ledger hardware wallet. 

1. Download Cosmostation on your mobile device’s app store (iOS and Android supported).
   

2. Create a new wallet. Choose “Cosmos Mainnet” in the following screen.

3. After finalizing your wallet’s creation, you will see your account overview. Send your ATOM to the provided address.

4. After receiving your ATOM, press the “Delegate” button.

5. Go to the “Top” tab and you will be provided a list of the top validators to stake with.

6. After choosing a validator, press the “Delegate” button for them.

7. The new window will allow you to set how much ATOM you wish to stake. We recommend staking nearly everything if you plan on holding your ATOM long-term. Leave at least $0.50 worth of ATOM in your wallet to pay for future fees. Be aware that staking your ATOM will lock it for 21 days. Unstaking will also take an additional 21 days if you choose to do so.

8. Continue until you get to the transaction fee. We recommend choosing “Average” to prevent the delegation from failing.

9. Press next and confirm the transaction in the final screen.

10. After approving the transaction, your ATOM is now staked and you will begin earning interest!

3. Ledger (Safest Option)

Having a Ledger hardware wallet is the absolute safest way to keep your cryptocurrencies safe. Cosmos is one of the cryptocurrencies that can be staked directly through Ledger. If you have a Ledger hardware wallet, this is the recommended method of staking it.

1. Install the Cosmos app onto your Ledger hardware wallet on Ledger Live.
   

2. When the app finishes installing, click “Add account”.

3. Follow the on-screen prompts until the account is added successfully.

4. Go to your new Cosmos account and click the “Receive” button or click the “Receive” button on the side bar.

5. Follow the on-screen prompts until you get your Cosmos address. Send your ATOM to this address.

6. After receiving your ATOM, you will now have an “Earn rewards” button in your Cosmos account. Click this.

7. Continue through the on-screen prompts until you see a list of validators. Unfortunately, ledger’s validator list can’t be sorted easily so you’ll need to use a validator website such as https://stake.fish/en/cosmos/leaderboard/ to see which validators are the most popular. Almost all validators should provide about 10% interest per year on your ATOM.

8. After entering in the amount of ATOM you wish to stake with your chosen validator, continue and verify the transaction with your Ledger hardware device. Be aware that staking your ATOM will lock it for 21 days. Unstaking will also take an additional 21 days if you choose to do so.

9. After approving the transaction, your ATOM is now staked and you will begin earning interest!

4. Coinbase

Coinbase is famous for being one of the most beginner friendly Cryptocurrency exchange platforms. However, it does have higher fees than other exchanges. By holding Cosmos on Coinbase, you will currently receive 5% interest per year on your Cosmos.

You can buy Cosmos on Coinbase and hold or transfer it in from another wallet. You will start accruing interest immediately.

Transferring ATOM to Coinbase

Desktop:

1. On the Coinbase website, click the “Send/Receive” button.
   

2. Click the “Receive” tab and choose Cosmos as the asset. Send your ATOM to the provided address using the provided memo ID.

3. After receiving your ATOM, you’re all done and you will start accruing interest immediately.

Mobile:

1. Press the double arrow button at the bottom middle of your screen and click the Receive button.
   

2. Change the chosen wallet to Cosmos and send your ATOM to the provided address using the provided memo ID.

5. Binance

Binance.us is another recommended exchange to buy Cosmos on. It has much lower fees than Coinbase and also boasts a higher rewards percentage for Cosmos as well. Binance.us gives 6-9% interest per year on your ATOM.

You can buy Cosmos on Binance.us and hold or transfer it in from another wallet. You will start accruing interest immediately. Rewards and distributed monthly.

Transferring ATOM to Binance.us

1. Go to your wallet tab and search for ATOM. Click the ellipses and then click “Deposit”.
   

2. Send your ATOM to the provided address using the provided memo ID.

3. After receiving your ATOM, you’re all done and will start accruing interest immediately. Binance.us distributes its rewards monthly.

6. Kraken

Kraken is another popular cryptocurrency exchange. While it isn’t as beginner friendly as other exchanges, it is still relatively simple to use and also has one of the best support teams out of all the cryptocurrency exchanges. Kraken currently provides 7% interest per year on your ATOM.

You can buy Cosmos on Kraken and hold or transfer it in from another wallet. You will start accruing interest immediately. Kraken distributes rewards twice a week.

Transferring ATOM to Kraken:

1. Go to the funding tab and click “Deposit”. Select Cosmos.
   

2. Click “Generate deposit address”.

Final Thoughts

Cosmos is a great cryptocurrency to have and has many different methods to earn interest on it. The easiest option to earn interest is to just buy it on an exchange that provides interest on it and hold it in your wallet there like with Coinbase and Binance.us. The tradeoff for this is that it is the most unsafe option (although it’s still very safe) and also provides the lowest interest per year on your ATOM because the exchange takes a cut of the total interest you should be getting.

The next best option is to transfer your ATOM to a software wallet. It is much safer there and you will be provided with a recovery phrase for your ATOM that can be used to restore it on any other wallet that supports ATOM. You also benefit from getting the full amount of interest possible.

Finally, the best option is to stake directly through a Ledger hardware wallet. It has all the benefits of a software wallet but also has the most security you possibly can have for your ATOM. We definitely recommend this method if you have a Ledger hardware wallet.

Celsius currently provides 4.25% interest on your XTZ. Currently Celsius has disabled withdrawals, so now is not a good time to sign up.

Desktop Version:

1. Go to https://celsius.network/ and create a new account.
   

2. Once your account is set up, you will see your dashboard.

3. Click on the “Receive” tab and then click “Add New Coins”. Add Tezos (XTZ) and it will then show up on your list of coins. Click “View and Copy Address”.

4. Send your XTZ to the provided address.

Mobile Version:

1. Install the Tezos Wallet (XTZ) app onto your Ledger device.

2. After installing the Tezos app, add a new Tezos account to Ledger Live.

3. After adding a new Tezos account, click “Receive” to get your Tezos wallet address.

4. Send XTZ to the given address.

5. After you’ve received your XTZ, go back to your Tezos account window and click “Earn Rewards”.

6. Select a validator to stake with and finalize the delegation process.

7. After finalizing the delegation process, you will begin receiving rewards after about 40 days.

2. Temple Wallet

Temple is a popular web wallet for your desktop browser. One of the benefits of the Temple wallet is that you can pair it with a Ledger hardware wallet for more security.

1. Go to https://templewallet.com/download and install the Temple wallet for your browser.
   

2. After installing, open up the Temple wallet in your browser and create a new wallet. Follow the on-screen instructions.

3. Once your wallet is created, click the “Receive” button.

4. Send your XTZ to the provided wallet address.

5. After you receive your XTZ, go back to the main wallet page and then click on the delegate tab. Click on the “Delegate now” button.

6. You will be given a list of nodes to stake with. They are already sorted in order of score, but you can click on the “Tezos Nodes” button to get more information on the nodes, including how much interest you can expect to get from them.

7. (Skip to step 8 if you’re not interested in viewing Tezos Nodes information) At the Tezos Nodes website, 3 important data points you’ll want to pay attention to are the yield, efficiency, and score. The yield will tell you how much interest you can expect to get per year staking with that node. The efficiency is how effective the node has been for the year. Total points is how reliable you can expect the node to be.

8. After choosing a node to delegate with, just click the Delegate button and finalize the delegation process. Do not worry about the additional fee, keep it at minimal. This has nothing to do with how fast you will get your interest. You can’t undelegate your XTZ but it is also not locked so you can transfer it any time you wish.

9. After finalizing the delegation process, your XTZ will be staked within a few minutes.

Pairing Temple wallet with Ledger hardware wallet:

1. Ensure the Tezos Wallet (XTZ) app is installed on your Ledger hardware wallet.

2. On the Temple wallet, click on your profile picture at the top right and click “Connect Ledger”.

3. Change the wallet account name for your Ledger wallet if you wish and leave everything else default and then click “Add Ledger Account”.

4. Follow the on-screen prompts and then you will have a new Tezos wallet account that is paired with your Ledger hardware wallet.

3. Kukai Wallet

The Kukai wallet is another popular web wallet but it is slightly more difficult to use. Just like the Temple wallet, Kukai can be paired with a Ledger hardware wallet for more security.

1. Go to https://wallet.kukai.app/ and click “New wallet”. Follow the on-screen prompts to create your new wallet.
   

2. Once you’ve created your wallet, send your XTZ to your provided wallet address.

3. After you’ve received your XTZ, go to https://www.tezos-nodes.com/ to find a node to stake with.

4. At the Tezos Nodes website, 3 important data points you’ll want to pay attention to are the yield, efficiency, and score. The yield will tell you how much interest you can expect to get per year staking with that node. The efficiency is how effective the node has been for the year. Total points is how reliable you can expect the node to be.

5. After choosing a node to stake with, copy its delegation address.

6. After copying the delegation address, go back to your Kukai wallet and click “Choose a baker”.

7. Paste the delegation address of your chosen node in the new screen. Press the “Preview” button and finalize the delegation process

8. After finalizing the process, your XTZ will be staked within a few minutes.

Pairing Kukai wallet with your Ledger hardware wallet

1. Ensure the Tezos Wallet (XTZ) app is installed on your Ledger hardware wallet.

2. On the main Kukai website, select “Connect Ledger”.

3. In the new screen, click “Connect” and follow the on-screen prompts to create a new Kukai wallet account that is paired with your Ledger hardware wallet.

4. Coinbase

Coinbase is famous for being one of the most beginner friendly Cryptocurrency exchange platforms. However, it does have higher fees than other exchanges. By holding Tezos on Coinbase, you will currently receive 4.63% interest per year on your Tezos.

You can buy Tezos on coinbase and hold or transfer it in from another wallet. You will start accruing interest immediately.

How to transfer Tezos to Coinbase

Coinbase Desktop:

1. On the Coinbase website, click the “Send/Receive” button.
   

2. Click the “Receive” tab and choose Tezos as the Asset. Your Tezos address will then be provided. Send your XTZ to this address.

Coinbase Mobile App:

How to send Tezos to Binance.us

1. Go to your Binance.us wallet and click the 3 dots to see the “Deposit” button for Tezos.

2. After clicking the “Deposit” button, send your XTZ to the provided address.

3. After receiving your XTZ, you will immediately begin accruing interest.

6. Exodus Wallet

Exodus is a good general purpose software wallet that supports many cryptocurrencies and supports staking on quite a few of them as well. Exodus has a mobile app and a desktop version. Exodus currently provides 5.66% interest per year on your Tezos.

Exodus Desktop Version:

1. Go to https://www.exodus.com/ and download and install the desktop app (Windows, Mac, and Linux supported)

2. Open the Exodus app, click the wallet icon, and select Tezos. You can search for it using the magnifying glass icon or just scrolling through the currencies until you reach it. Click the “Receive” button.

3. Send your XTZ to the provided address.

4. Install the “Rewards” app by clicking the + icon at the top of Exodus.

Final Thoughts

Celsius is a great method of earning interest on a variety of cryptocurrencies, such as XTZ, because it’s as simple as sending crypto to your Celsius wallet and holding. If you are planning on holding long-term, we recommend activating HODL mode on Celsius. This mode disables features such as sending cryptocurrencies out of your wallet and much more until you disable HODL mode.
